This initiative follows the precedent set by Uttarakhand, which became the first state in independent India to implement a Uniform Civil Code.
Couples in live-in relationships must register their separation. Failure to do so will result in imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of Rs 25,000, or both.
The State cabinet has also given its consent. After the Government’s approval, Uttarakhand will become the first State in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code.
Article 44 of the Indian Constitution provides for the State to endeavour to enact a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for all citizens throughout India.

Muslim organisations have so far opposed the Union Government’s proposed ‘Uniform Civil Code’ (UCC). Now Christian churches and organisations have also jumped on the bandwagon.
The country’s 22nd Law Commission, headed by former Karnataka High Court judge Ritu Raj Awasthi, has invited public opinion on the Uniform Civil Code.
Why a Court has to look into this ? The nationalist citizens feel that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) should have been implemented and the practice of polygamy should have stopped by now.
Many people fight for child and human rights. However, they are always mum over these issues concerning Muslims !
