Devotees had offered more than 20 tonnes of silver at the Shri Vaishno Devi Temple. The market value of the silver is estimated to be around ₹550 crore. When the Shrine Board sent the silver for melting, it was found to contain only 5–6 per cent actual silver. The remaining portion allegedly consisted of metals such as cadmium and iron, indicating that most of the silver was counterfeit.

After the matter came to light, Jammu-based advocate Deepak Sharma submitted a detailed complaint on 9 May to the Inspector General of Police (Crime Branch) and the Senior Superintendent of Police (Economic Offences Wing), Jammu, seeking registration of a case and an investigation into the matter. He expressed suspicion that the silver offered by devotees at the temple had either been adulterated or replaced. Considering the possibility of irregularities in the matter, he demanded a detailed investigation. When the police investigation failed to make progress, he approached the court seeking registration of a case and an investigation. (This is shameful for the police! – Editor)
