The Catholic Church in Meghalaya strongly opposes Uniform Civil Code

Shillong (Meghalaya) – Muslim organisations have so far opposed the Union Government’s proposed ‘Uniform Civil Code’ (UCC). Now Christian churches and organisations have also jumped on the bandwagon. A prominent Catholic Church in Northeast India has opposed UCC and has written a letter to the Law Commission of India objecting to it. The Church contends that, “Articles 341 and 342 of the Constitution provide special rights and provisions that empower tribal communities. This law will destroy these. What is urgency for the Union Government to enforce the UCC ?”.

Urging not to implement Union in India, the Church has further written that, “we request Government of India not to implement the UCC in our diverse country. People of our State are proud of their customs, traditions, beliefs. They cannot be allowed to be distorted by Union. This law is against Article 25 of the Constitution which gives religious groups right to manage its own affairs”

Last month, the Nagaland Government had said that Home Minister Amit Shah had assured its delegation that Centre was considering to exclude the Christian community and some tribal areas from the purview of the Uniform Civil Code.
