Appeal to recognised religious organisations as well to send opinions within 30 days
New Delhi – The demand of Hindus for the last several years for implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the country seems to be moving closer to passing the law.
The country’s 22nd Law Commission, headed by former Karnataka High Court judge Ritu Raj Awasthi, has invited public opinion on the Uniform Civil Code. Along with this, the Commission has also invited recognised religious organisations to send their views as well. Citizens and religious organisations must send their respective opinions within 30 days.
The previous i.e. 21st Law Commission also examined the subject of Uniform Civil Code 3 years ago. Following a letter sent by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, the existing Law Commission initiated the process in this regard.
The Uniform Civil Code is a proposal to formulate and implement personal laws which will apply uniformly to all citizens regardless of their religion, gender, and sexual orientation. All citizens will get equal justice in personal matters like marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance and succession.
Accordingly, the 22nd Law Commission of India decided again to solicit views and ideas of the public at large and recognised religious organisations about the Uniform Civil Code. Those who are interested and willing may present their views within a period of 30 days from the date of Notice through “click here” button or by Email at [email protected] to the Law Commission of India. The concerned stakeholders are also at liberty to make their submissions in the form of consultation/ discussion/ working papers on any of the issues pertaining to the Uniform Civil Code to the “Member Secretary, Law Commission of India, 4th Floor, Lok Nayak Bhawan, Khan Market, New Delhi – 110 003.” If need be, Commission may call upon any individual or organisation for a personal hearing or discussion.
