Uniform Civil Code to be implemented in Uttarakhand soon

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) – The Uttarakhand Government will implement the Uniform Civil Code in the coming days. All the formalities in this matter have been completed. The State cabinet has also given its consent. After the Government’s approval, Uttarakhand will become the first State in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code. Although this law is currently applicable in Goa State, it has been in force there since the Portuguese era.

According to the sources, this law will be applicable to all residents of the State. Scheduled Tribes and protected persons and communities notified under Articles 342 and 366 (25) of the Constitution have been excluded from the ambit of the law. A marriage can be concluded between a man who has completed 21 years of age and a woman who has completed 18 years of age. The marriage can be concluded according to any religious tradition or legal procedure; but it is mandatory to register it within 60 days of its occurrence.

Editorial Perspective

Instead of implementing UCC State-wise, the Union Government should implement it for the entire country.
