Guyana (Georgetown) – Guyana, a small island country in the West Indies near South America, has the largest Hindu population; but now a crisis has arisen as the neighbouring country Venezuela is trying to drill for oil and gas on the land of this country. The possibility of Hindus’ land grabbing by Venezuela has created fear among the Hindus.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has ordered the country’s state-owned enterprises to immediately begin exploration and production of oil, gas and mines in the Essequibo region of Guyana.

Two to two and a half lakh Hindus live in Guyana. According to 2012 statistics, an estimated 37% of Essequibo’s population is Hindu. They perform sacrifices during religious events. Now, what will be the effect on the Hindus here due to Venezuela’s efforts to control this area is not clear yet. According to a post by the ‘Hindu American Foundation’, Hindus in Guyana face many challenges and struggle to continue their customs and traditions.
