The Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain

Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh) – For the first time, a detailed account of the movable and immovable assets of Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple here, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, has been made public. Until now, the temple committee used to share only information regarding cash and online donations; however, this time, important details regarding the temple’s total financial assets, bank fixed deposits, land holdings, and gold and silver have also come to light.

According to the information released by the temple committee, the temple has fixed deposits worth ₹472 crore in various banks, ₹16 crore in cash, and nearly 90 acres of land. In addition, the gold and silver ornaments offered by devotees over the years are estimated to be worth more than ₹300 crore. However, citing security reasons, the complete official details of the gold and silver assets have not yet been made public.

After the inauguration of Shri Mahakal Lok by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 11 October 2022, the number of devotees visiting the temple has increased unprecedentedly. Earlier, 40,000 to 50,000 devotees visited the temple daily for darshan; now this number has increased to 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh devotees every day. During the financial year 2025–26, the temple received donations exceeding ₹142 crore.

Every year, ₹135 crore is spent on employees’ salaries, security, cleanliness, maintenance, construction works, the Annakshetra, the Goshala, the Mahakaleshwar Vedic Research Institute, cultural programmes, and the management of festivals.

Editorial Perspective

  • It is shameful for Hindus that while crores of rupees are collected as donations in Hindu temples, they are not used for the protection of Hindu Dharma, education on Dharma, propagation of Dharma, or bringing converted Hindus back into the fold of Hindu Dharma !
  • When the money received by mosques, madarasas and churches is used for attacking Hindus and places of worship, converting Hindus, etc., what is the use if the wealth of temples does not serve any purpose for Hindus ?
  • What could be more shameful than the fact that governments of all political parties, which come to power through Hindu votes, do not free Hindu temples from government control, and Hindus themselves do not question them ?
