The Sri Lankan Navy had arrested more than 550 Indian fishermen last year, while more than 150 fishermen have been arrested this year.

Dissanayake joined the JVP, the parent party of the NPP, in 1987, during a time when the party was involved in anti-India uprisings.
After political negotiations between the two countries, all fishermen are being released in batches.
India appealed to Sri Lanka not to allow such ships to enter its ports.
