Ruby and sapphire are well-known gemstones. However, very few people know them by their mineral name – Corundum. Even fewer may be aware that the Tamil-Dravidian word ‘Kurundam’ is the origin of the name corundum. Kurundam means Ruby-sapphire. In Sanskrut it appears as ‘Kuruvinda’.

Chemically, corundum is actually a crystalline form of aluminium oxide. It is a naturally transparent material, but can have different colours depending on the presence of transition metal impurities such as iron, titanium, vanadium and chromium in its crystalline structure. A gemstone-quality specimen of corundum with a deep red, blue and yellow colour is known as ruby, blue and yellow sapphire respectively. Rubies derive their red colour due to the presence of chromium. The variety of colours seen in sapphires is because of the specific transition metal present in them. All this information on the physical characteristics of gemstones from the corundum family is available to society from books, websites, etc. In this article, we will share with you their spiritual characteristics.

1. Associated Absolute Cosmic Principle

Corundums are predominantly associated with the Absolute Fire Principle (Tejtattva).

2. Importance as per astrology

Gemstones have their own spiritual characteristics based on which they have a lot of spiritual energy (Shakti) and characterisitics. This is why, it is advisable to refrain from wearing gemstones merely as per one’s wish. It is better to wear them as per the advice of a qualified astrologer as to when and how. If a gemstone is worn at the wrong time, the wearer may have to suffer its adverse effects.

When we wear rings studded with gemstones, the corresponding Deity Principle is attracted to the gemstones and gets emitted into our body. This results in synchrony between the person and planet. This way we are blessed by the corresponding Deity of the planet, resulting in fulfillment of our worldly and spiritual desires.

2A. Ruby : As per astrology, ruby is associated with Ravi, that is, the sun. Ruby has the ability to absorb the radiance/brilliance (Tej) and energy (Shakti) of the sun. Those who are suffering from the malefic position of Ravi in the horoscope benefit upon wearing ruby as per the advice of astrologers.

2B. Blue sapphire : As per astrology, blue sapphire is associated with Shani (Saturn). Deity Shani bestows a person as per his past karmas. Upon wearing blue sapphire as per the advice of an astrologer, one experiences the benevolent grace of Deity Shani. This grace gives the wearer the strength to face the difficult situations in life arising from his past karmas. This is why, it is advisable to wear it when suffering from the malefic position of Shani in the horoscope.

2C. Yellow sapphire : As per astrology, yellow sapphire is associated with Guru (Jupiter). Guru is symbolic of knowledge. Hence, the vibrations of this planet are yellow in colour. Hence, the vibrations of Guru are attracted to the yellow sapphire in a higher proportion. When worn in a ring, it gives a variety of benefits at the spiritual level.

2C 1. Wearing yellow sapphire with ruby and coral is spiritually beneficial : Sun and Mars are friendly grahas (Planets) of the Guru graha. This is why, the vibrations of ruby associated with Sun and coral associated with Mars match to a large extent with the vibrations of yellow sapphire associated with the Guru graha. Hence, wearing yellow sapphire with ruby and coral is spiritually beneficial.

2C 2. Wearing yellow sapphire with emerald and diamond is harmful : Mercury and Venus are enemy grahas of Guru graha. Hence, wearing emerald which is associated with Mercury and diamond which is associated with Venus, their vibrations clash with each other. This results in a harmful effect, leading to various forms of physical, psychological, intellectual and spiritual distress. This is why, it is best to avoid wearing yellow sapphire with emerald and diamond.

3. Where to wear

Generally, it is beneficial for women to wear gemstones on their left hand and men on their right hand. Ruby should be worn on the ring finger, blue sapphire on the middle finger and yellow sapphire on the index or ring finger.

4. Colour

4A. Ruby : This is reddish in colour. The sun’s radiance is also reddish. Hence, sun’s energy and radiance is attracted to the red ruby in a very high proportion. The ‘Aryama’ form of sun bestows us with radiance and vision to the eyes. This is why, upon wearing a ruby, the vision of the wearer improves. Similarly, the sun is associated with health. Hence, the health of a person wearing a ruby improves.

4B. Blue sapphire : The colour of Shani is dark blue. Due to the dark blue colour of blue sapphire, the energy (Shakti) of Deity Shani is attracted to it. This is why, a person wearing a blue sapphire is blessed with benevolent grace of Deity Shani.

4C. Yellow sapphire : This is available in yellow, golden, orange and greenish-yellow colours. From gemology perspective, sapphire of lemon-yellow colour is known to be of the highest quality. This colour also gives highest spiritual benefit, since maximum proportion of vibrations of the Guru graha are attracted to the yellow sapphire which is of lemon yellow colour. Across various variables such as the ability to absorb vibrations of Guru, proportion of spiritual benefit, capacity to reduce distress caused by subtle negative energies, capacity to adjust to body vibrations, the lemon yellow sapphire is the best followed by the yellow, golden, orange and the greenish-yellow that has the least capacity.

4C 1. Reduction in brightness of the colour of yellow sapphire reduces its efficacy : The brightness of the colour of sapphire is directly associated with its spiritual purity (Sattvikata) and Divine consciousness (Chaitanya). The wearer obtains spiritual benefit from the gem only so long as its original brightness is intact. When the brightness reduces, its sattvikata and Chaitanya also reduce. Hence, a covering of distressing vibrations is created on the gem. Consequently, the gem becomes incapable of protecting the wearer. Therefore, wearing a yellow sapphire with reduced brightness does not give any spiritual benefit. Hence, it is best to stop wearing it.

We can keep a yellow sapphire with reduced brightness in a solution of water and rock salt for 5 minutes and then wash it and keep it in the sun for some time. If the distressing covering is removed, its brightness returns. In such a case, it can be used as before. If the brightness does not return despite the spiritual remedy, then it is best to stop wearing it.

4C 2. Wearing yellow sapphire with white or black spots can increase spiritual distress of the wearer : When subtle negative energies attack a person, the negative vibrations are absorbed in the items protecting the person, such as gold or silver jewellery, gemstones embedded in jewellery such as rings, clothes worn by the person, etc. Appearance of white and black spots on the yellow sapphire are an indication that the gem has absorbed subtle attacks on the wearer. Due to this, the sattvikata of the gem is destroyed and distressing energy is activated in it. Hence, wearing a yellow sapphire with white or black spots can result in various forms of distress. It is best to stop wearing such a gemstone and perform spiritual remedies on the gemstone as well as the self for protection.

5. Clarity

The clarity of gemstones is associated with its spiritual benefit. The more the clarity of a gemstone, the more its capacity to attract and emit the corresponding Deity Principle. This is a universal rule applicable to all gemstones.

8. Effect of chemical treatment

Any freshly mined gemstone is never of gem quality. This is why, it has to be heat treated to increase its clarity, to intensify and sometimes even to change its colour. Nowadays, gemstones are exposed to a variety of other sophisticated treatments too. From the spiritual perspective, it is best to subject gemstones to minimal chemical treatment that is required to bring required clarity and brightness to it. This increases the gemstone’s ability to absorb and emit the Deity’s Principle. However, the chemical treatment directed at changing the original colour of the gemstone creates a change in the original constituents of the gemstones. This reduces their sattvikata. Therefore, a gemstone with a lot of chemical treatment, though great in appearance, does not yield much benefit at the spiritual level.

9. Using natural gemstones is spiritually more beneficial than artificial gemstones

Due to its simple chemical makeup, synthetic corundum created artificially in laboratories was available in the market from the early 1900s. Their best feature is they are considerably cheaper. However, they have less spiritual benefit. Also, the sattvikata in the gemstone is more if it is used close to its natural form. Giving a finish to the gemstones by using sattvik cuts and shape, also the treatment given to increase the clarity of the gemstone increases its sattvikata. In contrast, no matter how good looking an artificial gemstone, its sattvikata is always less compared with a natural gemstone. Sometimes distressing vibrations are emitted by artificial gemstones. Hence, wearing such a gemstone does more harm than good. This is why, it is spiritually beneficial to wear a natural gemstone.

10. Difference at the spiritual level between a natural gemstone, imitation and artificial gemstone

Nowadays, good quality imitations for rubies and sapphires are created by gluing coloured synthetic corundum crystals under natural colourless ruby or sapphire. Glass is also used to imitate gemstones. Obviously, imitations cost a fraction of the originals. However, spiritually they are of not much use or are actually detrimental as explained in the table ahead. (See Table D) In this article we have explained some salient points about the spiritual aspects of rubies and sapphires. Taking them into consideration, readers can make informed decisions while buying these gemstones. The various variables explained in particular about this family will also give an indication about the factors to take in consideration about other gemstones too.
