A School Forces 8-Yr-old Hindu Boy to Leave for Applying ‘Tilak’

London (Britain) –  In a primary school, an eight- year- old Hindu student had to leave the school because he applied ‘Tilak’ on his forehead. According to a report of ‘Insight UK’, an organisation and advocacy working for the British Hindus and Indian community, such behaviour with a minor Hindu boy is most inappropriate.

The boy was frightened as the school headteacher continuously kept an eye on him during the break times in a manner the boy found intimidating, leading him to withdraw from playing with other boys, and isolate himself from his peers.  It was also alleged that the eight-year-old was removed from positions of responsibility within the school solely because of his religious practice, an act that, if proven, constitutes direct religious discrimination under the Equality Act 2010, where religion is a protected characteristic. “No child should feel watched, singled out, or isolated because of its faith, especially not from a person of authority. Such experiences can have lasting emotional impacts and raise serious safeguarding questions,” an INSIGHT UK spokesperson said.

School ignores parents’ protests

The parents of the student, along with other Hindu parents, reportedly made repeated and reasonable attempts to educate and engage the headteacher and school governors on the religious significance of Hindu practices, including the ‘Tilak’; but it was reported that rather than engaging constructively, these efforts were dismissed with unacceptable answers, with the school administration demonstrating an unwillingness to acknowledge or understand Hindu religious observance. This was not a good-faith dialogue – it was an imbalance of power, where Hindu religious practices were scrutinised, minimised, and ultimately rejected,” said an Insight UK spokesperson. Four students had to leave the school due to communal discrimination. A complaint has been lodged even with the local education officer in this context.

Editorial Perspective

Similar incidents take place even in India; therefore, nothing surprising if they happen in London. Anyone and everyone bully Hindus since Hindus do not fight for their own Dharma.
