
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – Sadrul Anam (22), a fanatic Muslim man, brutally murdered Sawariya Basant (22), a Keralite student, for refusing to convert to Islam. Both were first-year MBBS students at the Bukhara State Medical Institute in Uzbekistan. The Uzbekistan Police arrested the accused. After the victim’s body was brought to Kerala, the Kerala Police also registered a case based on a complaint filed by her parents and commenced an investigation.
On 23 July, after an argument between the two on the college campus, Sadrul Anam launched a fatal attack on Sawariya’s head with a heavy laptop. She died in the attack. According to eyewitness students, the accused had previously been pressuring Sawariya to convert to Islam and had also been subjecting her to mental harassment. Kerala Police stated that the accused is currently lodged in a prison in Uzbekistan, and information regarding the investigation there has been sought through the Indian Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs. Further legal action will be taken in accordance with the judicial process in Uzbekistan.
