Eggs thrown at Shri Jagannath’s Rath Yatra in Toronto, Canada

Strong reaction from the Indian Government

Toronto (Canada) – A shocking incident occurred in Toronto where eggs were thrown at the chariot during Shri Jagannath’s Rath Yatra. The Government of India has expressed strong outrage over the act. The incident came to light after an Indian woman participating in the Yatra posted about it on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). India’s Ministry of External Affairs has demanded immediate action from the Canadian Government against the culprits.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of the ongoing Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha, with a similar celebration being held in Toronto. A woman shared a video of the Yatra, saying, ‘While we were holding the Rath Yatra, some eggs were thrown at us from a nearby building. Meanwhile, the Canadian Government claims there is no racism here.

India demands immediate action against the offenders

India’s MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X:

‘We have seen reports regarding disruption created by mischievous elements during the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto. Such despicable acts are regrettable and are against the spirit of the festival, which seeks to promote unity, inclusivity, and social harmony. We have strongly taken up the matter with Canadian authorities to hold the perpetrators of the act accountable. We hope the Canadian Government will take necessary action to protect the religious rights of people.

Such incidents anger the people of Odisha too: BJD Chief Naveen Patnaik

Naveen Patnaik, President of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), also condemned the incident. He said, ‘The news of eggs being thrown at Rath Yatra in Toronto is deeply painful. For the people of Odisha, this festival is not only emotional but also culturally significant. Such acts hurt not just the sentiments of Jagannath devotees across the globe, but also deeply anger the citizens of Odisha.

Editorial Perspective

The possibility of Khalistani elements being behind this incident cannot be ruled out. India must not stop at merely expressing concern — it must exert diplomatic pressure on the Canadian Government until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
