London, UK – Several countries worldwide are backing India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and Britain has now joined this list. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently voiced his support for India’s permanent membership during the 79thsession of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He said the Security Council has to change to become a more representative body and officially recommended India for a permanent seat from the UNGA platform.

France also supports India’s bid for a permanent seat on the Security Council.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, French President Emmanuel Macron backed India’s permanent membership. Macron stated, ” Let’s make the UN more efficient. We need to make it more representative and that’s why France is in favour of the Security Council being expanded. Germany, Japan, India, and Brazil should be permanent members, along with two countries that Africa will decide to represent them”. India has long sought permanent membership to better represent the interests of developing countries.

Currently, the UN Security Council consists of 15 member states, including five permanent members with veto power and ten non-permanent members elected for a two-year term. The five permanent members are China, Britain, France, Russia, and the United States.
