Mandya (Karnataka) – A saffron flag bearing the image of Deity Hanuman, erected on a 108- feet high flagpole by Hindus through donations in Keragodu village of Mandya District, was forcibly taken down by the Karnataka Police. When the Hindus opposed this, the Police beat them up with lathis. This incident took place on the night of 27 th January. Section 144 has been imposed in this village. The repercussions of this incident can be seen across Karnataka.

1. This pole with the flag was erected near the theatre in the village. The permission of Gram Panchayat was also taken for this, but some people in the village did not like it and complained against it. Based on this complaint, the authorities in Mandya removed the flag from the pole on the night of 27 th January. A large Police force was deployed at that time. The protesting villagers were beaten with lathis.

2. The environment in the village had become tense on the morning of 28 th January. Infuriated by the removal of the flag, the villagers decided to keep Keragodu closed. Villagers protested by tearing down the placard of local Congress MLA Ravindra Kumar. Some people have alleged that Ravindra Kumar is behind the whole incident.

3. Bajrang Dal, BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) party workers present there are protesting and demanding reinstatement of saffron flag.

Will stage protest in all Districts of Karnataka – BJP

BJP leaders and activists of Hindu organisations have strongly protested the removal of the Hanuman flag. BJP leader R Ashok questioned the actions of the Congress Government in the State and argued that the Hanuman flag was hoisted with the approval of the Gram Panchayat. We are going to stage protests in all the Districts of Karnataka in this matter, he said.

Saffron flag was hoisted after seeking permission to hoist the national flag – Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s allegation

Regarding the incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that it is against the rules to hoist the saffron flag where the tricolor is hoisted. Permission was given for hoisting the national flag, but another flag was hoisted there. There may be politics behind it. I don’t know who is behind this. This country is run by democracy and constitution. If this is permitted in one place, the same will apply in other places too. Tomorrow, they may demand hoisting the saffron flag in front of the District Magistrate’s office, should it be allowed ? We are not here to hurt our youth. I have spoken to officials, Police and youth. We are ready to hoist Hanuman flag at private places or near temples. We will support them. We are also the devotees of Shriram.

Editorial Perspective

Since the last few months, in Karnataka, Hindus have started to experience daily that they are living under the rule of Tipu Sultan. Now only when Hindus across the State unite and oppose such incidents, pressure will be created on the Government to take action.
