Sri Lankan Navy detains 6 Indian fishermen

Second Incident within a week

Colombo (Sri Lanka) – The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 6 Indian fishermen. This is the second such incident within a week. All the arrested fishermen were fishing in international waters at the time of their arrest. However, the Sri Lankan Navy detained them and seized their boats. All these fishermen are from the Pudukkottai District in Tamil Nadu.

This year, a total of 220 fishermen have been arrested. In 2023, Sri Lanka has so far apprehended 220 Indian fishermen and seized 33 of their boats. In October, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin wrote to the Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, informing him about the arrest of fishermen from Tamil Nadu by the Sri Lankan Navy and requested a decision on this matter. During his visit to India in July this year, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe met with Prime Minister Modi, who raised the issue of the arrest of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka. Editorial Perspective

Despite India’s aid, which helped Sri Lanka receive assistance from international financial funds to avoid bankruptcy, Sri Lanka is exhibiting such ingratitude. It is imperative for India to reconsider its assistance to Sri Lanka.
