The World Health Organization will declare the artificial sweetener as ‘carcinogenic’

Aspartame is one of the commonly used sweeteners in soft drinks, energy drinks, and chewing gum

London (Britain) – The World Health Organization (WHO) will declare artificial sweeteners (non-saccharide sweeteners) as ‘carcinogenic’ next month. Soft drinks, energy drinks, and chewing gum will be affected by this decision. An announcement about this will be made on 14th July.

1. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an intergovernmental agency forming part of the WHO, had previously advised food establishments not to use non-sugar sweeteners for weight control. It was opposed. Therefore, there is a possibility of opposition if the decision is made about artificial sweeteners now.

2. According to IARC, the aim is not to create confusion by declaring artificial sweeteners carcinogenic, but rather to promote further research.

3. Last year, 1 Lakh people participated in observational studies in France. A study found that people who consume artificial sweeteners are more likely to develop cancer.

Editorial viewpoint

The foreign establishment might put pressure on the World Health Organization to cancel the announcement in view of the massive sale of their soft drinks in India. Considering this, the Indian Government should immediately ban the sale of such foods in the country.
