Letter from Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister Tariq Rahman to India’s Prime Minister

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained for several months; however, Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister Tariq Rahman is making efforts to improve them. On the occasion of Eid, he wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing hope that “this auspicious occasion will further strengthen the friendship and long-standing ties between the people of both countries.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had also extended Eid greetings to Tariq Rahman and the people of Bangladesh.
1. Rahman had previously written to Modi as well, outlining his stance on India–Bangladesh relations and indicating that Bangladesh is ready to move forward, leaving the past behind.
2. He noted that “Bangladesh attaches great importance to its relationship with India, as it is based on shared history, culture, and geographical proximity.” According to him, the people of both countries have many similarities, and their relationship is very close.
3. In the letter, he also mentioned that both countries need to resolve issues in a way that benefits ordinary citizens. Doing so, he said, would help achieve significant progress in areas of mutual interest.
