Impact of Trump’s threat to impose tariffs

Ottawa (Canada) – After US President Donald Trump, enraged by Canada’s recent trade agreement with China, threatened to impose a 100 percent import tariff on Canada, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney appealed to Canadian citizens through a video message to use domestically produced goods. Carney stated that Canada’s economy is currently facing an external threat and that the country must therefore focus on what is within its own control.
Trump had also warned that “China will swallow Canada within a year.” It is also being reported that Trump threatened higher import tariffs because Prime Minister Mark Carney had opposed Trump’s “Golden Dome” air defence project.
Canada supplies a large share of crude oil, gas, and electricity to the United States. In addition, automobile parts, timber, and agricultural products are exported in large quantities from Canada to the US.
