The Flag represents a Nation’s identity. It is a symbol of the Nation’s respect and pride. The citizens of India show their tremendous love and respect towards the Nation on 15th August and 26th January by proudly displaying the Tricolour wherever they can.
Unfortunately, this pride is short-lived. By the evening, the same Flags are seen lying in garbage bins or sewage pipes, we find these Flags getting trampled upon on the roads. People forget that this is an insult to the Flag.
Often, these Flags are burnt with garbage. Every citizen must properly respect our National Flag. For over two decades, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has been using various media to create awareness through the ‘Respect National Flag’ Campaign. Due to its untiring efforts, HJS has succeeded in ending 95% production of plastic National Flags, and the subsequent denigration of the Flag.
Proactiveness of HJS : Some examples
- A 2011 PIL filed by HJS in the Bombay High Court prompted the Court to instruct the Government to ban plastic Flags
- The Court instructed the Government to work with NGOs & set up an Action Committee to stop insult of the Flag
- HJS held lectures, quizzes, distributed pamphlets, put up posters, etc. to create awareness on maintaining the Flag’s honour
- HJS submitted memorandums to schools, colleges, public representatives, Police and administrative officials
- HJS volunteers collected discarded Flags after 15th August and 26th January and deposited these with the administration
- HJS actively pursued the Central Home Ministry to act against e-commerce websites & others who sell masks, apparel, other items with the National Flag printed on them
- HJS published articles in various dailies, weeklies, websites to reach out to as many people as possible. Some radio stations also helped in this regard.
