Racist graffiti on Swaminarayan temple in Melbourne by unidentified miscreants

Melbourne (Australia) – In the Boronia area of Melbourne, unidentified individuals defaced the walls of the Shri Swaminarayan temple with objectionable and racially hateful messages. Graffiti reading “Go home brown” was found on the temple’s walls. Similar offensive phrases were also discovered on the walls of two nearby Asian restaurants. In response, Hindu and multicultural organisations raised a collective voice against the hate incident. The local community and the City of Greater Knox’s Multifaith Network extended their support to the temple.

Strong condemnation by Hindu Council of Australia

Makrand Bhagwat, President of the Hindu Council of Australia (Victoria Chapter), expressed anger and said this temple symbolises peace, devotion and unity. Such incidents are an attack on our religious freedom and identity.

Private message from Chief Minister Jacinta Allan

Although Victoria’s Chief Minister Jacinta Allan has not publicly condemned the act, her office has sent a private message to the temple management. The message described the incident as hateful, racially motivated and fear-inducing. CM Allan stated that Victoria Police are investigating the matter seriously.

Four incidents under investigation

According to a Police spokesperson, four incidents in the Boronia and Bayswater areas appear to be connected. Offensive graffiti was reported at the Swaminarayan temple, two Asian restaurants and one healing centre. Authorities emphasised that such hateful behaviour has no place in society.

Editorial Perspective

Just two days ago, a person of Indian origin was assaulted in Adelaide due to racial hatred, and now a Hindu temple has been targeted with racist graffiti. The Government of India must take note and pressure the Australian Government to act against the culprits and ensure such incidents do not recur.
