Ceasefire between Iran and Israel after 12 days of war

Iran launches missile attack on Israel even after Trump announces ceasefire; Israel responds

Washington DC (USA) – Just when fears of a third world war loomed large due to US involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict, US President Donald Trump suddenly announced a ceasefire. Initially, Iran rejected it, but later agreed to it. Before this, Iran had launched missile attacks on US airbases in Qatar and Iraq. Even after the ceasefire announcement, Iran launched missiles at Israel, resulting in the death of 3 people. Over the past several days, Israel and Iran have been at war, causing heavy losses to both countries. More than 1,000 people were killed in Iran. During this period, the US entered the war and destroyed three of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Trump furious over violation of ceasefire by Iran and Israel

After both countries launched attacks despite the ceasefire, Trump expressed anger, saying, ‘Iran violated the ceasefire, but so did Israel. I am not happy with Israel either’. Even after this warning, Israel attacked Iran again, prompting Trump to post, ‘Israel will not attack Iran. All jets will return home, and we will build friendly relations with Iran. No further harm will be done. The ceasefire is in effect!’

Soon after, Trump posted again, saying, ‘Iran will never again rebuild its nuclear facilities’.

Iran’s state-run news agency IRINN announced the ceasefire. It claimed that Iran’s attack on the US base in Qatar on 23rd June forced Israel to accept the ceasefire.

What did the war achieve?

Iran possesses nuclear weapons and could potentially use them against Israel, which prompted Israel to launch attacks. However, in 12 days, Israel was unable to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities due to a lack of sufficient capability and had to seek US help. The US then destroyed three Iranian nuclear sites.Still, it is unclear whether Iran’s nuclear programme has truly been crippled. Reports suggest Iran moved 400 kg of uranium (essential for making nuclear bombs) to an undisclosed location before the attacks. Hence, the question arises: What did Israel and the US achieve from this war?

This war could have destroyed the entire Middle East: Trump

While announcing the ceasefire, Donald Trump wrote on social media:

‘CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED! Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL. On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.” This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!(sic)’

All objectives of the war against Iran achieved: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel has accepted the ceasefire proposal and that all of Israel’s objectives in the war against Iran have been accomplished.

Iran attacks Qatar

(Iranian Missiles being intercerpted in mid-air)

In retaliation for the US strikes on its nuclear sites, Iran attacked US airbases in Qatar and Iraq on the night of 23rd June. A total of 19 missiles were launched, but 18 were intercepted and destroyed mid-air.

Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the attack, stating it violates international law and neighbourly relations. SaudiArabia called it a reckless act that cannot be justified under any circumstances.

Iran’s clarification

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council clarified that the US ‘Al-Udeid airbase in Qatar is far from civilian areas, and that the attack posed no danger to Qatar or its people. Iran remains committed to maintaining historical ties with Qatar.

Is the ceasefire a trap to assassinate Khamenei?

Even after the ceasefire, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has not emerged from his bunker. He fears Israel might assassinate him under the guise of a ceasefire. Khamenei is hiding with his family and has made no public statements since the truce. He reportedly does not trust Donald Trump at all and believes stepping out may be too risky.

Editorial Perspective

Even after Trump’s ceasefire announcement, there is no guarantee how long it will last. Trump had made a similar announcement regarding the India-Pakistan conflict, but if Pakistan attacks again, war could resume. This remains an ongoing risk.
