Tehran (Iran) – Iran has initiated steps towards closing the narrow Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. According to a report broadcast by Iran’s ‘Press TV,’ the Iranian Parliament has approved a resolution to shut down the Hormuz waterway. This strategic channel handles approximately 20% of the world’s oil and gas shipments. Iran’s decision has triggered concern across the globe. In response, the United States has appealed to China for assistance.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in an interview with ‘Fox News’ on 22nd June, urged China to persuade Iran against closing the Strait. He stated, “I will encourage the Chinese Government to talk to Iran because even China imports a significant portion of its oil via this waterway.” However, China has yet to issue any official response to America’s request.
“It will affect others more than us” – United States
Rubio further remarked, “If Iran closes the Strait, it would be a grave mistake — an act of economic suicide. We have multiple alternatives to handle the situation, but other nations should take this seriously. The economic damage to other countries would be far greater than to us. This is a major geopolitical move, and global responses will be crucial.”
“If Iran attacks us, it would be its biggest blunder ever”
After the U.S. strike, Iran too has geared up in defence and issued a direct warning that America will have to pay a heavy price for its actions. Rubio responded, “If Iran attacks us, it would be the gravest mistake it has ever made. The U.S. is open to dialogue with Iran.”
