Washington (USA) – US President Joe Biden celebrated Diwali at his official residence ‘White House’ on the night of 28th October. More than 600 Indian-American citizens attended the event.
During the celebration, President Biden said that throughout his tenure as president, vice president, and senator, he has worked closely with a significant number of Indian-American citizens. He noted that the South Asian American community has enriched every aspect of American life and is the fastest-growing community in the world. Diwali is now celebrated with pride in the White House.
Vice President Kamala Harris and Biden’s wife were unable to attend the Diwali event. Biden mentioned that both Jill and Kamala Harris wanted to be there but were busy with campaigning.
Sunita Williams sends greetings from space
Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams sent her Diwali wishes via a video message from the International Space Station.
She said that this year she has the unique opportunity to celebrate Diwali 400 km above the earth. Her father always taught them about Diwali and other Indian festivals, connecting them to their cultural roots. Diwali is a moment of joy, as the festival spreads goodness in the world.
Diwali being celebrated in White House since 2003
Diwali celebrations at the White House began in 2003 during George W. Bush’s presidency. In 2009, Barack Obama celebrated Diwali privately at the White House after becoming president.
48% of 54 lakh Indians in the US are Hindus
According to a survey by the Pew Research Centre, there are 54 lakh people of Indian descent in the United States, with 48% (approximately 25 lakhs) identifying as Hindus. Currently, over 130 Indians hold significant positions in the Biden administration. It is estimated that 38% of doctors in the U.S. are of Indian descent. Indian-Americans are the highest-earning ethnic group in the United States.
