UAE displeased with their citizen Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest
Abu Dhabi (UAE) – The United Arab Emirates has cancelled its agreement to purchase 80 Rafale fighter jets from France in response to the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France. The deal, signed with French firm Dassault in 2021, involved the delivery of the aircraft by 2027. Following Durov’s arrest, the United Arab Emirates is now reconsidering its military and technical cooperation with France. Durov, a Russian-born who is also a citizen of France and the UAE, faces serious allegations, including the exchange of child sexual abuse material, drug trafficking, and using Telegram to facilitate organised crime.
1. The United Arab Emirates Foreign Ministry has reached out to French authorities to offer legal assistance to Pavel Durov. The ministry stated that they are closely monitoring the situation, emphasising that the safety and interests of their citizens remain their top priority.
2. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented that relations between Russia and France have hit an all-time low following Durov’s arrest. He noted that the allegations made by France are severe and will require substantial evidence to substantiate them.
