(Visa is a permit granted by a country allowing a foreign citizen to enter and stay for a specified period)
Dhaka – On 26thAugust, a chaotic scene unfolded at the Indian Visa Centre in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. A large group of Muslim protesters stormed the centre and raised anti-India slogans. Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. The Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka has brought this matter to the attention of the Bangladesh Ministry of External Affairs.
Since the outbreak of violence in Bangladesh and the removal of Sheikh Hasina’s Government, India has significantly reduced its visa processing at centres in Bangladesh. In the previous year, 1.6 million Bangladeshis visited India. Of these, 60% were tourists, 30% sought medical treatment, and 10% visited for other reasons. (The Indian Government should also release data on how many of these returned to Bangladesh and take concrete measures to deport Bangladeshi citizens residing illegally in India. This is the sentiment among ordinary Indians – Editor).
Editorial PerspectiveThe anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh are on a rise. This incident is a clear example of that. India should take steps to teach Bangladesh a lesson for life. |
