Supreme Court on pollution : We cannot let people die due to pollution

The Supreme Court reprimanded Punjab and Delhi Governments

New Delhi – The Supreme Court strongly admonished the Punjab and Delhi Governments, emphasising , “We cannot let people die due to pollution”. The Court made this statement while hearing petitions filed in connection with pollution in Delhi.

The Court said,

1. Despite our intervention, pollution continues to increase every year. We are not pollution control experts but we need a solution to the problem. We only want to apply the solutions in this context at the root level.

2. Stubble burning is a major cause of pollution. This is happening due to the cultivation of a particular breed of crop in Punjab. At such times farmers should be encouraged to cultivate other type of crop and stubble burning should be banned.

3. Everyone knows the cause of pollution. Governments are waiting for Court intervention. We have a solution for every problem but we can’t do anything. We won’t say it is easy but the State Governments have to do it.

4. What do you think, should we mandate that all Government officials work without masks, then they will be aware of the health of the general public ?.

Editorial Perspective

Despite the Aam Aadmi Party Governments being in power in Punjab and Delhi, their inability to control pollution stems from a lack of coordination. This is shameful for the Aam Aadmi Party. Is this acceptable to the people who elected such a party ?
