Siliguri (Bengal) – A distressing incident unfolded in Siliguri, Bengal, where a 17-year-old Nepali Hindu girl lost her life while protesting against an attempted rape. The perpetrator, identified as Mohammad Abbas, has a history of such crimes, having previously attempted to assault another woman, which led to his eventual capture.

The young victim was discovered in her school uniform in Ravindrapalli, Siliguri. Reports suggest that Abbas attempted to sexually assault her, but she bravely resisted. In response, Abbas resorted to violence and attacked her with a brick, leading to her tragic death. Law enforcement promptly responded and arrived at the scene upon receiving news of the incident and recovered the victim’s body.

Abbas, a 22-year-old man with two wives, had previously been arrested for a similar crime. In this case, he targeted the girl as she was returning home from school. He dragged her into an abandoned building, where he attempted to carry out the assault. However, her cries for help alerted people nearby, and Abbas fled the scene, leaving her in critical condition. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries.

The victim’s family is rightfully demanding swift justice for this heinous crime, urging that Abbas be sentenced to death. Outraged by this incident, women activists from Siliguri and members of the Bajrang Dal organisation protested outside the local Police station, calling for immediate and decisive action against Abbas.

At this time, a senior female member of the Siliguri Women’s Organisation stated that due to the negligence of the police and the judiciary, those involved in rape cases brought under the “POCSO” act are granted bail within 2-3 days. Many Muslim individuals in this region target Nepali Hindu girls. If such incidents are not curtailed immediately by the police, our organization will take to the streets in protest.
