Central Government directs the State Governments to provide relief to migrant workers

Thousands of migrant workers in various parts of the country who are working in different cities were heading back to their hometowns on foot. The Ministry of Home Affairs intervened and issued a directive to all State Governments and Union Territories to make arrangements for the inter-State migrant workers. The directive specifically asked the States to provide these migrant workers and the homeless people accommodation, food, clothes, medicines, etc. The Central Government asked the States to use the ‘Emergency Assistance Fund’ for this purpose. (Why does the Central Government have to issue such a directive ? Why do the State Governments not realise it themselves ? – Editor)
