Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue removed at midnight in Congress-ruled Telangana !

Administration claims the statue had been installed without permission

Bhagyanagar (Telangana) – On the midnight of 18 June, the municipal corporation removed the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from the Neredmet area under police protection. According to the administration, the statue had been installed without the necessary permission. The statue was removed with the help of a crane and shifted to another location. Local residents and supporters said that carrying out the operation at midnight amid tight security had hurt people’s sentiments and that the administration should have first adopted the path of dialogue.

During the operation, some people opposed the removal and gathered at the spot in an attempt to stop it. The police then intervened and took some people into custody. Tension prevailed in the area for some time. Although the situation in Neredmet is presently said to be peaceful, there is resentment among locals over the action.

The administration stated that the statue had been kept at a safe place and that further action would be taken according to law.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue had also been removed in January !

This incident is not new. In January 2026, too, controversy had erupted after the police acted against a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj erected without permission in the Vinayak Nagar area of Neredmet.

Editorial Perspective

  • Has the administration acted with such promptness on the assumption that no other incident lacking permission has taken place in Telangana ?
  • Had an unauthorised statue of Tipu Sultan been installed here, would the administration have acted with the same promptness ?
