Supreme Court refuses to interfere with Bombay High Court’s decision acquitting all the accused !

2006 Mumbai train serial blasts case

New Delhi – In the 2006 serial bomb blasts on Mumbai’s suburban trains (local trains), the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had named 28 Muslim men as accused and arrested 13 of them. In July last year, the Bombay High Court acquitted all the accused. The State Government challenged this decision before the Supreme Court; however, the Supreme Court also categorically refused to interfere with the finding of acquittal and the order directing their release.

In September 2015, a Special MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) Court had convicted the accused. At that time, the Court sentenced five accused to death and seven to life imprisonment, while acquitting one accused. Thereafter, the Maharashtra Government approached the Bombay High Court seeking confirmation of the death sentences, while the convicted persons challenged their convictions and sentences before the High Court. In July 2025, the High Court acquitted all of them.
