
New Delhi – According to the report of the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), 4,791 schools across the country were closed during the academic year 2025–26. This means that, on average, 13 schools are closing every day. Of these, 2,426 schools were closed in Madhya Pradesh alone, followed by Telangana, where 1,392 schools were closed. Thereafter, 568 schools were closed in West Bengal, 474 in Andhra Pradesh, 369 in Tamil Nadu, 281 in Karnataka and 266 in Himachal Pradesh.
5,663 schools have no students, yet 20,667 teachers remain in service !
For the first time, the number of zero-enrolment schools, that is, schools with no students, has declined. Over the past year, the number of such schools has decreased from 7,993 to 5,663. However, 20,667 teachers continue to be posted in these schools.
In West Bengal, the number of zero-enrolment schools increased by 321 during the past year. These schools had 1,573 teachers despite having no students. Overall, 4,133 schools in West Bengal have 19,502 teachers, even though there is not a single student for them to teach.
Girls’ enrolment increases by 42.2% !
According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), the participation of girls in higher education is increasing. Over the past 10 years, girls’ enrolment has increased by 42.2%, and the report states that the proportion of girls in higher education has now surpassed that of boys.
