Hindu student brutally assaulted by Muslim students for saying ‘Jai Shriram’ in Baruipur, West Bengal

  • Victim forced to apologise

  • West Bengal education dept officials assure action against culprits

Kolkata – In an outrageous incident that took place in Baruipur, a town in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, a Hindu student studying in Class 10 was subjected to a brutal assault by his Muslim classmates within the school premises after the slogan “Jai Shriram” was raised. The incident occurred on 4 June at Madarat Popular Academy. After the video of the incident went viral on social media, a large protest by Hindus took place outside the school on 10 June.

According to available information, the victim, Debajit Haldar, was dragged into the school lavatory by a group of 10 to 12 Muslim students.

Debajit said,

1. The attackers had mistaken him for another student. He resembled the boy who had actually raised the slogan “Jai Shriram” in the classroom.

2. He was confined inside the lavatory. Although he repeatedly tried to explain that he was not the student concerned, no one listened to him and he was forced to apologise.

3. While some students assaulted him, others recorded videos of the incident.

4. He informed his teachers about the assault; however, according to him, no action was taken.

Family expresses concern

Debajit reportedly sustained injuries to several parts of his body, particularly to his ear, and is experiencing hearing difficulties. He has been taken to doctors on multiple occasions and is said to be suffering from psychological trauma. Owing to fear, he has stopped attending school. An official complaint has been lodged at the Baruipur Police Station.

After the assault video surfaced on 10 June, several Hindu organisations and BJP supporters gathered outside the school in large numbers. They demanded strict action against the accused students. Protesters also blocked a road during the protest. Amid rising tensions, teachers and students were reportedly stranded within the school premises. It is also reported that some of the attackers were allegedly assaulted by angry protesters.

School recommends suspension of the accused students

When a representative of Sanatan Prabhat contacted Pinaki Dutta, Additional Superintendent of Police for South 24 Parganas district, he reportedly said that no Police action had been taken in the matter because it involved minors, and that the school Administration was dealing with the issue.

The school’s headmaster, Saikat Purkait, has reportedly written to senior authorities recommending the suspension of the accused students. Speaking to Sanatan Prabhat, he said that no further action had yet been taken. He added that the school administration had convened a meeting involving the victim’s family, the parents of the accused students, and Police officials. During the meeting, the families of the accused reportedly apologised.

A senior education department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that appropriate action would be taken against the Muslim students involved.

Editorial Perspective

Owing to such incidents, one wonders whether Baruipur is in India or in Bangladesh? The Government must instil sufficient fear among religious fanatics to ensure that such incidents never happen again.
