Bangladesh’s opposition making it difficult to send illegal infiltrators back across the border

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – The Border Security Force (BSF) had pushed 10 to 12 Bangladeshi infiltrators back across the border through the Jayantipur border outpost on the India–Bangladesh border in Bengal. However, due to opposition from the Bangladeshi side, they had to be taken back. A day after the incident, the local unit of the Indian paramilitary force had to take the individuals back due to objections raised by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

According to the BGB, between 7 May 2025 and 26 January 2026, a period of eight months, 2,479 Bangladeshi nationals were sent into Bangladesh from India. Of these, at least 120 were later identified as Indian citizens, while some were Rohingya refugees. Bangladesh has strongly protested such incidents.

Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaid, recently said that Bangladesh would not accept people being pushed across the border in this manner under any circumstances.
