10. Ayurveda has classified vomiting as vataja, pittaja and kaphaja types depending on which dosha (humour) is predominant.

10A. Vataja vomiting

10A 1. Causes : A. Dietetic : Eating in excess pungent, bitter, astringent or dry food items. B. Activity : Excessive exercise or exertion or keeping awake at night.

10A 2. Symptoms : In vataja vomiting, nausea is the predominant symptom and vomiting occurs only occasionally. Belching is noticed. The patient suffers from pain in the upper abdomen.

10A 3. Diet : The patient should fast and take a rigorously restricted diet. In the initial stages, the patient should be given liquids such as rice kanji, juices of sweet lime, orange, pomegranate, lemon and kokam diluted by adding water, sugar and salt or buttermilk. The patient should drink only 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls every 15 to 20 minutes.

After vomiting subsides and the patient feels hungry, the dietary intake should be gradually stepped up. The patient should be given mutton soup, chicken soup, milk, curds. When the appetite returns to normal, he should be given sweets such as jilebi, pedhha, barfi, etc. The patient should avoid pungent, bitter, astringent and dry food items.

10A 4. Medicinal treatment

A. Mayurapichchha bhasma (ash of peacock feathers) : Feathers of peacock should be burnt and 120 mg. of its ash should be mixed with lemon juice and honey and licked on and off .

B. Shankha bhasma (ash of a conch) : 120 mg. of shankha bhasma should be mixed with lemon juice and honey and licked on and off.

C. A cup of milk medicated with 120 mg. of powder of yashtimadhu (glycerrhiza) should be drunk.

D. Dadimavaleha should be taken in a dose of one teaspoonful twice a day.

E. 120 mg of saindhav salt should be mixed with ghee and given to the patient.

F. 60 mg. each of powders of ginger, pepper, pippali, saindhav salt & bidalavan salt should be mixed with ghee and administered.

G. Kokam sarbat (a sweet drink made from the extract of kokam fruit) or lemon sarbat (lemonade) should be given.

H. A decoction of mahalunga, amlavetas, bor, pomegranate, yava (barley), yashtimadhu, ushira (vala) and tender leaves of mango should be administered after it has cooled.

I. Ghee

1. Ghee medicated with dashamula should be administered.

2. Ghee medicated with coriander, ginger, curds and pomegranate should be administered.

60 mg. of suvarna sutashekhar should be taken 4 times a day.

J. Medicines to control vomiting : A decoction of bitter gourd, chandan (sandalwood), raktachandan (red sandalwood), murva, guduchi, patha and kutaki should be taken.

10B. Pittaja vomiting

10B 1. Symptoms : Loss of appetite, nausea, green, red or yellow colour of vomitus, loose stools and burning sensation in
the body.

10B 2. Causes : Eating pungent, sour, salty or oily food items in excess. Working in the sun or in hot weather. Excessive exercise or exertion.

10B 3. Diet : Juices of sweet lime, pomegranate, apple, grapes, jamun, tender coconut water, sugarcane juice, coriander water and soup of moong (green gram) should be given in minimum quantity initially and slowly increase body intake corresponding to the hunger. One should eat fruits with honey. After vomiting stops, one should drink milk and consume butter and ghee that should be gradually increased. The patient should avoid pungent, sour, salty and oily foods. The patient should be given purgatives such as nishottara or triphala.

10B 4. Medicinal treatment

A. 1 teaspoonful of dry black grapes and 1/4 teaspoonful of nishottara powder should be taken with water.

B. Ushirasava

C. Cold water medicated with powders of chandan (sandal-wood), ushira (vala), jatamansi and dry black grapes should be taken.

D. A decoction of guduchi should be taken.

E. Juice of amalaki and paste of chandan should be taken.

F. Juice of the stem of the banana tree should be taken.

G. A decoction of guduchi, triphala, karela (bitter gourd) and kadunimba should be taken.

H. Water medicated with ushira, pippali and coriander should be drunk.

I. Sugarcane juice or milk should be drunk.

J. Powder of popped rice mixed with sugar and water should be taken.

K. Kokam sarbat (a sweet drink made from the extract of kokam fruit) should be drunk.

L. A mixture of jamun fruit, tender leaves of mango, mahalunga, bor, pomegranate and yashtimadhu (glycerrhiza) should be taken.

M. Taking 60 mg. of suvarna sutashekhar 4 times a day.

N. 60 mg. of suvarna makshik should be taken 4 times a day.

O. 60 mg. of praval bhasma (ash) should be taken 4 times a day.

P. 60 mg. of mauktik bhasma should be taken 4 times a day.

10C . Kaphaja vomiting

10C 1. Causes

Eating oil, ghee, fat, fried items, heavy, sweet, sour and salty food items in excess. Sleeping in excess and inactivity.

10C 2. Symptoms

Sticky, slimy, whitish vomitus, nausea and laziness.

10C 3 . Diet

Pomegranate juice, apple juice, lemon juice, buttermilk, soups of moong (green gram), masur, chana (chickpea), kulith (horse gram), yava (barley) water, buttermilk, curry medicated with ginger, coriander, pepper and pippali should be taken intially.

After vomiting is controlled, increase the diet gradually. Avoid sweet, sour and pungent food items.

If the patient is having nausea, induce vomiting by giving madanaphala powder with a decotion of yashtimadhu (glycerrhiza).

10C 4. Medicinal treatment

A. Drink a decoction of dashamula.

B. Buttermilk curry medicated with ginger, pepper and pippali should be drunk.

C. Powders of triphala, vidanga and ginger should be taken with honey.

D. Two pinches of cardamom powder should be taken with
one teaspoonful of juice of tulsi (holy basil).

E. A mixture of powders of equal parts of haritaki, ginger, pepper, pippali, coriander seeds, cumin seeds and kapittha (woodapple) should be licked with honey.

F. Juice of jamun, amlavetas, bor and pomegranate should be taken with yava (barley) water.

G. Kokam sarbat should be consumed.

H. A clove should be kept in the mouth.

I. Saffron should be licked with honey.

J. 120 mg. of mayurapichchha bhasma (ash of peacock feathers) should be licked with lemon juice and honey.

K. 120 mg. of shankha bhasma (ash of a conch) should be licked with lemon juice and honey.

L. 60 mg. of suvarna sutashekhar should be licked with honey 4 times a day.
