Garhwa (Jharkhand): Stone-pelting on Police by Muslims on the day of Shriram Navami

Opposition to installation of Mahavir flag

Garhwa (Jharkhand) – A dispute that began ahead of the Shri Ram Navami celebrations in Ramkanda block headquarters of Garhwa district escalated into a violent clash on March 26th. The disagreement reportedly arose over the route of a religious procession, sound arrangements, and the installation of the Mahavir flag, which faced strong opposition from members of the Muslim community.

During the incident, stone-pelting was reported, prompting the police to use tear-gas shells to bring the situation under control. The area currently remains under tense calm, with heavy police deployment across the locality to maintain law and order.

Obstruction to installation of Mahavir flag

On the evening of March 25th, devotees proceeding to install the Mahavir flag near the Kauakhokh Shiv platform were allegedly stopped near Triveni Chowk. A dispute also arose regarding the use of loudspeakers, following which slogan-shouting intensified tensions.

The situation quickly escalated, with members from both sides confronting each other. Police intervened promptly and managed to restore temporary control.

On March 26th, a large crowd reportedly gathered on the streets and incidents of stone-pelting took place, creating an atmosphere of fear in the area. Shops in the marketplace were closed as a precaution. Stones were also allegedly thrown at police personnel, further aggravating the situation. Eventually, under police protection, devotees succeeded in installing the Mahavir flag near the Kauakhokh Shiv platform.

Tension despite peace committee meeting

Authorities stated that attempts to disturb communal harmony occurred despite a peace committee meeting held at the local police station ahead of Shri Ram Navami. Representatives from both communities had agreed during the meeting to celebrate both Shri Ram Navami and Ramadan peacefully.

However, tensions resurfaced on the day of Shri Ram Navami, culminating in clashes and stone-pelting incidents targeting police personnel, according to reports. (This suggests that members of the Muslim community attend peace committee meetings only for the sake of it, while allegedly intending to target Hindus which they actually do later. – Editor)
