Supporters blocked the highway and pelted stones at the police, leading to several hours of tension in the area. Police later brought the situation under control. During the unrest, 5 to 6 police vehicles were damaged. As the situation began to escalate, police resorted to baton charges and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
What exactly happened ?
Farsa Wale Baba, who operated a cow shelter (gaushala) in Ajanokh village near Barsana, had reportedly received information about illegal transportation of cattle on the Kosi National Highway. Upon receiving the tip-off, Baba set out from the gaushala on a motorcycle along with 2 young associates.
When they reached the Bathan Gate area on the highway, they spotted a truck allegedly involved in cattle smuggling. As Baba attempted to stop the vehicle, the smugglers reportedly accelerated, leading to a chase of nearly 7 kilometers.
The pursuit ended near Navpur village in the Kotwan outpost area, where Baba positioned himself in front of the truck and managed to halt it. According to supporters, after Baba dismounted from his motorcycle, the truck driver allegedly restarted the vehicle and ran him over deliberately. Police are currently investigating the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
During the incident, one suspected cattle smuggler was apprehended, while two others managed to escape.
Farsa Baba was widely known as a cow protector and was often seen carrying an axe, which earned him the nickname “Farsa Wale Baba.”
Editorial PerspectivesAlthough cow slaughter has been banned through laws in several states across the country, cow slaughter has not stopped due to alleged inactivity and corruption within the police and administration. As a result, cow protectors are still compelled to take to the streets day and night to prevent such activities, sometimes leading to tragic incidents like this. This is a matter of shame for the police and administration ! Merely enacting laws does not stop crimes; strict enforcement is essential. If laws against cow slaughter and religious conversions are not implemented rigorously, what purpose do they serve ? |
