Chhattisgarh BJP Govt approves anti-conversion bill

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) – The BJP Government in Chhattisgarh has approved the draft of the ‘Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Bill 2026’. The bill is seen not just as a legal document but as a comprehensive system to protect the cultural integrity of the State, tribal identity and religious freedom of its citizens. The bill will be presented before the House in the ongoing session of the Legislative Assembly and will become a law after getting approval.

The Government argues that while religious belief is a personal matter, if it involves temptation, deception or pressure, it becomes a threat to social harmony. Keeping this threat in mind, the Government has amended the old rules to introduce a new framework that strikes at the root of illegal conversions.

Minimum sentence – 10 years imprisonment; Maximum sentence – life imprisonment

If a person or group is found guilty of mass conversion, they can be punished with a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life imprisonment. Not only imprisonment, but also a minimum fine of Rs 5 lakh has been provided.

According to the new provisions of the punishment, if a minor, woman, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or other backward class person is converted, the person concerned will be punished with imprisonment for 10 to 20 years and a fine of at least Rs 10 lakh. In general cases, the punishment is 7 to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.

Editorial Perspective

Rather than enacting this law State by State, BJP’s Union Government must enact a nationwide anti-conversion law. The Congress and other anti-Hindu political parties will never enact such a law.
