United States to build a new oil refinery after 50 years

  • Reliance Industries of India to invest in the project

  • Trump thanks Reliance and India

Washington (USA) – U.S. President Donald Trump announced the construction of a new oil refinery at the Port of Brownsville in Texas. This will be the first new oil refinery to be built in the United States in nearly 50 years.

The project is expected to involve an investment of approximately $300 billion, and India’s leading private energy company Reliance Industries will also participate as an investor. During the announcement, Trump expressed special gratitude to India and Reliance for their participation.

According to Trump, the project will increase America’s energy production, ensure greater fuel availability for the domestic market, and strengthen national security. It is also expected to generate thousands of jobs in the South Texas region and boost the local economy.

Who will develop the project ?

The refinery will be developed by a company named America First Refining. The project has secured major investments from global energy firms, along with a 20-year energy purchase and supply agreement. Construction of the refinery is expected to begin in the 2nd quarter of 2026.

Why has no new refinery been built in the U.S. for 50 years ?

According to experts, several factors contributed to the long gap

1. Strict environmental regulations

2.
High financial cost of building new projects

3. Expansion of existing refineries being more economical

4. Energy transition policies

As a result, over the past few decades, the United States focused on expanding existing refineries rather than constructing new ones.
