Chennai (Tamil Nadu) — In a significant boost to India’s maritime security, the Indian Navy has commissioned the anti-submarine warfare vessel INS Anjadeep into active service on 27 February. It is the third ship in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft designed to operate effectively in coastal and shallow waters.
Measuring 77 metres in length and built with over 80 per cent indigenous content, INS Anjadeep reflects India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The commissioning ceremony was attended by Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff. The vessel has been constructed by Kolkata-based defence shipbuilder Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers.
Key features of INS Anjadeep
Main role : The warship has been specifically designed as a ‘submarine hunter’. Its primary mission is to detect, track and neutralise enemy submarines operating in shallow and near- shore waters, thereby strengthening coastal defence.
Reason behind the name : The vessel is named after Anjadeep Island, situated off the Karwar coast in Karnataka, symbolising India’s maritime heritage.
Strategic benefits : The induction of INS Anjadeep will significantly enhance India’s indigenous defence production capability and reduce dependence on foreign imports. It is a modern successor to the earlier naval vessel of the same name, which was decommissioned in 2003.
INS Anjadeep can attain a top speed of 25 knots (approximately 46.3 km per hour), enabling swift response during maritime operations. It has been purpose-built to meet the complex challenges of contemporary naval warfare. Notably, it is the largest waterjet-propelled warship in the Indian Navy to date. The vessel will strengthen the Navy’s ability to detect and counter underwater threats and further enhance coastal surveillance and mine warfare capabilities.
