Religious institutions receive the highest share of donations in India at 45.9%, says survey report

Indians donate ₹54,000 crore annually

New Delhi – Nearly 46% of individual donations in India are directed towards religious institutions, while about 42% are given directly to beggars, according to the third edition of the “How India Gives” report. The study, released by the Centre for Social Impact and Philanthropy at Ashoka University, highlights that Indians rank among the most generous populations globally.

The report states that ordinary households constitute the backbone of charitable giving in the country, with 68% of people contributing in some form. Total annual household donations across India are estimated at approximately ₹54,000 crore.

The findings are based on 7,225 nationally representative surveys conducted across 20 states and aligned with consumption data from the National Sample Survey. The study provides detailed insights into how everyday Indians support social causes through cash donations, in-kind contributions and voluntary service.

According to the report, 45.9% of everyday contributions flow to religious institutions and 41.8% are given directly to individuals such as beggars, while only 14.9% of donations reach non-religious organisations.
