Maldives claims Mauritius’ Chagos Islands !

Proposed USA to have a naval base there

Male (Maldives) – Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has proposed to the United States that if the Chagos Archipelago is handed over to the Maldives, the United States can continue its naval base at Diego Garcia. Notably, the archipelago belongs to Mauritius, which the United Kingdom had recognised sovereignty of Mauritius in 2024. Last month, US President Trump had strongly criticized the United Kingdom for signing an agreement with Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago.

Mauritius has made it clear that it will not relinquish its sovereign rights over the archipelago. Diego Garcia is currently under British control and will be transferred to Mauritius under an agreement signed last year.

Editorial Perspective

Since Muizzu became the President of the Maldives, he has been taking anti-India decisions, which is an attempt to increase proximity with China and the United States. India should also oppose this !
