Washington – Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and a billionaire entrepreneur, has said that “America has greatly benefited from the talent of Indian people.” He expressed this opinion while speaking with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath.
When Kamath asked about the rising number of Indian CEOs in leading Western companies, Musk replied that America has significantly benefited from the skills coming from India. He added that the U.S. needs Indian talent now more than ever.
Musk further said the belief among some Americans that “foreigners take away American jobs” is incorrect. Many companies face a shortage of capable and skilled professionals, and it is difficult to find the right people for challenging projects. Therefore, a larger presence of talented individuals is actually essential.
Tried to Explain Import Duties to Trump
Musk expressed clear disagreement with Donald Trump’s import duty policies. Trump decided to impose import duties on certain countries. “I tried explaining to him that import duties would have long-term negative effects on the U.S. economy, but he didn’t listen,” Musk said.
Clear Position on H-1B Visas
Musk stated, “I am not in favor of completely shutting down the H-1B visa program, as some groups demand. That view is wrong. Although there have been some issues in the H-1B system, shutting it down entirely would not be the right approach.”
Why Are Musk’s Statements on India Important ?
Elon Musk was once considered a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump. However, disagreements over Trump’s import duty and H-1B visa policies caused major friction between them. These policies negatively affected India as well.
In the interview with Kamath, Musk openly opposed these policies and praised Indians. Following his comments, global attention has turned to whether tensions between Trump and Musk will escalate again.
What Is the U.S. Government’s H-1B Visa Policy ?
The H-1B visa allows U.S. companies to hire skilled foreign professionals. The majority of beneficiaries are highly educated Indians.
In 2024, 71% of all H-1B visas issued by the U.S. government were granted to Indians. After Trump took office, his administration began imposing high fees on companies hiring foreigners under this visa. This has particularly affected Indians.
Major companies in the U.S. have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s policy.
