Tension in a Kerala Convent School as Student wears a Hijab

Kochi (Kerala) – A girl student studying in the 8th standard of St. Rita’s Public School at Palluruthy created tension by going to school wearing a hijab. The school administration, therefore, declared a holiday on 13th and 14th October 2025. The school Head Mistress Sister Helena Arsi issued a letter stating the following :

1. One student started wearing a hijab instead of the school uniform. The girl’s parents created a hue and cry in the school, claiming it to be their religious right, when the school management objected and stopped the girl at the school’s entrance.

2. The behaviour of the student and her parents created mental tension for some teachers and students. As a result, after holding discussions with the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA), it was decided to keep the school closed for two days. An officer from the Education Department also visited the school and conducted an inquiry.

Tension created due to members of the Social Democratic Party of India

One of the PTA members, Joshi Kaithavalappil, stated that the school has had the same uniform for the past thirty years and students of all religions follow the rule. The concerned student also followed the rule for four months; but from 10th October 2025, she started covering her head, which the school didn’t allow. Her parents insisted that she should be allowed to wear the hijab. They came to school with a few people and started creating a ruckus and video-shooting, which caused fear among the other students and teachers. The matter aggravated due to the support of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). (SDPI is a political wing of the banned organisation Popular Front of India [PFI]. This shows that now even SDPI needs to be banned. – Editor) The girl’s father said that this is affecting equality, “It is our right”. (It is necessary to tell him that Kerala is not in Pakistan. The question is – Will the family leave the country if it is not allowed to use hijab and other Islamic attire in this country ? – Editor)
