Bill proposed to ban Hindi songs and films in Tamil Nadu

DMK government’s anti-Hindi stance in Tamil Nadu

Chennai – The DMK government in Tamil Nadu has introduced a bill aimed at curbing the promotion of the Hindi language. If this bill is passed and becomes law, Hindi songs, films, and advertisements will be banned across the state.

1. The DMK government claims that this decision is necessary to protect the Tamil language and the state’s cultural identity.

2.  An emergency meeting was held with experts to discuss the draft of the bill. According to the DMK, this initiative strengthens the Dravidian movement’s historic stand against what they describe as the Union Government’s imposition of Hindi.

3. Senior DMK leader T K S Elangovan stated, “We will not do anything against the Constitution. We follow the Constitution. Our opposition is to Hindi imposition, not to the Hindi language itself.”

4. The BJP has strongly criticised the DMK government’s decision. BJP leader Vinodh Selvam condemned it as ‘irrational’, saying that language should not be used as a political tool. He added that the DMK government is raising such emotional issues to divert attention from its failures in various court cases and other controversies.

Editorial Perspective

To safeguard their political turf, the DMK is deliberately nurturing anti-Hindi sentiment among Tamilians. A government that fosters such divisive attitudes can hardly claim to act in the public interest.
