New Delhi – On the eve of Vijayadashami (2nd October) at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) burnt a Ravana effigy with photographs of jihadi terrorist Afzal Guru and anti-national speakers such as Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam affixed to it. Left-leaning student organisations (All India Students Association, Students Federation of India and Democratic Students Federation) expressed outrage over this act. After the Ravana burning, when a procession for the immersion of the Durga idol began, left-wing groups attacked that procession at the Sabarmati T-point inside the university. According to ABVP, slippers, boots and stones were thrown at the procession. Several male and female students were injured.

1. During the attack, leftist students shouted obscene and provocative slogans along with ‘Inquilab Zindabad’. ABVP alleged that all this was planned under the leadership of the left’s JNU student union president, Nitish Kumar.

2. Mayank Panchal, president of ABVP’s JNU unit, said, ‘This incident is a direct attack on students’ faith and the university’s cultural tradition’. He added that leftist groups have sullied a sacred festival with violence and hatred.

3. Vaibhav Meena, joint secretary of the JNU student union, also strongly condemned the incident and said, ‘The hatred for Indian culture is clearly visible from this’.

Allegations by leftist groups

The leftist organisations accused ABVP of deliberately trying to create religious tension on Gandhi Jayanti. They said the attempt to present Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in Ravana form and burn their effigies was part of an Islamophobic mindset and political propaganda. They asked why ABVP did not burn effigies or display photos of Nathuram Godse, Gurmeet Ram Rahim, or leaders who delivered inflammatory speeches during the 2020 Delhi riots.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Anyone whose blood does not boil upon reading reports of attacks on Hindu Dharma is not a Hindu !
  • What links do jihadi terrorists have with the leftist student organisations ? These organisations are attacking Hindu religious processions in support of those jihadi elements — this shows they are anti-national and anti-Hindu, and the Union Government should ban them. Hindu organisations should press the Government to take action !
