Subtle : The physical aspects of an individual are the five sense organs – the nose, ears, eyes, tongue and skin. These five senses, beyond the mind and intellect, are ‘subtle’. These ‘subtle’ sensations are felt by some people who have advanced in their spiritual practice. ‘Subtle’ is that which is beyond the comprehension of the five sense organs, mind and intellect. Various Scriptures contain references to subtle knowledge.
Suitable spiritual practice enhances faith and devotion of seekers. As a result, they too obtain knowledge of the subtle realm or get spiritual experiences pertaining to the subtle dimension.
Negative energies : Positive as well as negative energies are active in the environment. Positive energies assist humans in performing virtuous tasks and negative energies cause distress. There are many narrations in the Vedas and Puranas about demons creating obstacles in the Yajnas (Sacrificial fires) of Sages and Ascetics in the ancient times. At many places in the Atharvaveda, mantras have been given to thwart demons, pishacha (Spirit of a deceased individual), etc. In brief, negative energies cause distress in various ways to those who perform sadhana. Scriptures have recommended spiritual remedies to ward off such distresses.
