Islamabad (Pakistan) – Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has issued a provocative statement claiming that India has been defeated in conventional warfare, and now Pakistan will also defeat it in a “water war.” He dismissed rumours of any secret dialogue between India and Pakistan. Asif further alleged that the flow of water from the Chenab River has significantly declined and accused India of deliberately controlling it. He added that water availability in Pakistan’s rivers is currently down by 21%.

Asif stated that Pakistan’s two major dams—Mangla and Tarbela, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province—have less than 50% of their usual water capacity. In Punjab, water flow is down by 14,800 cusecs compared to last year. Additionally, the availability of water from the Indus River has dropped by 10.3% over the previous year.

Meanwhile, Pakistani officials have raised concerns that with India walking away from the Indus Waters Treaty, it will no longer share flow data with Pakistan. This could complicate flood management during the monsoon season.

Editorial Perspectives

  • The age-old Pakistani attitude of dog’s tail can never be straightened resurfaces once again. India must decisively finish this threat once and for all through firm action.
  • The abrogation of the Indus Waters Treaty has left Pakistan in dismay. If the Defence Minister still believes they can defeat India in a ‘water war’, it only shows how deeply India’s recent actions have shaken them.
