Ranchi (Jharkhand) – On April 1st, a violent clash erupted when a group of fanatic Muslims attacked the Sarhul festival procession of the Sarna sect in Hethbalu, Ranchi. The Sarhul festival, a significant celebration for the tribal community, involves worshipping nature, with men and women dancing around a sacred fire. Several people were injured in the attack and have been admitted to the hospital. In response, police security has been tightened in the area.
Tensions leading to the attack
1. Flag dispute – Muslims had set up electric lamps on both sides of the road. In celebration of Sarhul, tribals hoisted the Sarna flag at the same location. A day before the festival, tensions escalated between the two groups over this issue. On April 1st, as the tribals arrived to celebrate, a scuffle broke out, leading to violence. Reports indicate that 8 tribals from the procession were injured, while the Muslim side claims that 4 of their members were also hurt.
2. Weapons brandished – According to local villagers, Arif Ansari brandished a weapon during the altercation. He was arrested and handed over to the police. However, the authorities have yet to officially confirm these allegations.
3. Political reaction – Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and BJP leader Babulal Marandi criticized the state government on social media platform ‘X,’ stating that Chief Minister Hemant Soren has failed to protect Sarna sites and even the Sarhul festival itself.
