7.7 Richter scale earthquake shakes Myanmar

  • Tremors felt in India, Bangladesh, Thailand and China

  • 43 people crushed under collapsed buildings

  • Emergency declared in Thailand

Nepita (Myanmar) – India’s neighbouring countries Myanmar and Thailand experienced strong earthquake. According to National Centre of Seismology, the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.2 on the Richter scale. The intensity could be felt as far as Bangladesh, China and the Capital of India, Delhi. The epicentre of the quake was 10 km. below the earth surface, near Mandalay city in Myanmar.

1. After the earthquake, hundreds of people came out of the buildings on the streets in Bangkok, capital of Thailand. People came out from the high risers and hotels. The intensity of the quake was so much that the swimming pool water gushed out from the high risers. Many buildings felt  intense tremors after the earthquake, so, people were evacuated from such buildings.

2. In Myanmar, a major bridge on a river has collapsed. An under-construction high riser collapsed completely. Reportedly 43 people are trapped under the debris.

3. Prime Minister of Thailand, Pithongtarn Shinavatra has declared emergency due to devastation.

4. The Myanmar fire department has said, “We are assessing the loss of lives and properties. So far, we have not received much information”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expresses concern


The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi posted on X, “I express concern over the situation after the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. I pray for the safety and well being of all. India offers all possible help. Our officials have been asked to be prepared in this regard. Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been asked to be in contact with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand.
