Justice Sanjeev Khanna became the 51st Chief Justice of the country

New Delhi – Justice Sanjiv Khanna has become the 51st Chief Justice of the country. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to him on 11th November at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Chief Justice of India Dhananjay Chandrachud retired on 10th November.

The tenure of Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna will be only for 6 months. 64-year-old Justice Khanna will retire on 13th May, 2025. As a judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Khanna has given 65 judgments. He was a member of 275 Benches during this period.

Justice Hansraj Khanna, uncle of Justice Sanjeev, was a Supreme Court judge; however, despite his seniority, he was not made the Chief Justice due to his opposition to the emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government. Justice Mirza Hamidullah Baig (MH Baig) was made the Chief Justice in his place. (This shows that Congress leader Indira Gandhi took revenge on her opponents during the Emergency.
